The Cooperativa Regional de Cafetaleros de San Juan del Rio Coco (CORCASAN) was founded in 1978 in Madriz, northern Nicaragua. Today, the coop has 250 members, 160 of whom are farmers who grow coffee at altitudes between 1000 and 1400 masl on the tropical hillsides under canopies of shade trees. Harvest period in the region extends from November to March each year.
CORCASAN has grown steadily since it was established, especially since becoming Fairtrade certified in 2005. Becoming certified allowed the coop to access financial services, fund developments and export higher volumes and qualities of coffee. CORCASAN's structure incorporates technical assistance and training for members, a logistics network to efficiently manage coffee collections and deliveries, a well-equipped processing facility and an experienced team, well versed in specialty coffee. CORCASAN also invests in education programs for members and their families, as well as supporting producers to harvest rainwater and conserve water sources. They have also focused on reforestation and improving members’ housing.
We have selected this lot from CORCASAN's 2018 crop, which comes from multiple smallholders in and around Matagalpa. Varietals included in this lot are Caturra, Catuai and Catimor and it is certified Organic. In the cup it is sweet, balanced and creamy, with notes of hazelnut, chocolate and pear.
