Coroico is a small town on the Yungus road between La Paz and Caranavi. The town is at around 1550 masl and is surrounded by jungle and small coffee farms. After the land reforms in the 1950s the Bolivian government encouraged people from the Altiplano and La Paz to move down to the tropical agricultural areas to farm coffee by giving them free parcels of land. Coroico in particular was one of the larger settlements for people from the Altiplano, and therefore many of the coffee producers there are very small, having between 1 and 3 hectares, and practise more traditional organic farming methods. The altitude in the Coroico area is between 1650 and 1900masl, which gives the cup profile lots of acidity and complexity, especially when coupled with great varieties like Caturra and Typica.
Since producers in Coroico produce relatively small amounts, they join together in their colony and drive the coffee to the Buena Vista mill in Caranavi, where it is processed and dried altogether. This allows all of the producers to reduce their risk as they get paid immediately, and gives the mill control over the quality of processing to ensure that the producers receive quality premiums later.
This lot was dried completely on raised beds, where it dried for 14 days. This long drying time ensures that the coffee is stable and uniformly dried, which means it retains its flavours for longer.
